Blockchain news platform Oracle Times has been threatened with a potential trademark infringement case by the CMS Oracle Corporation, one of the world’s largest ERP software companies.
According to a blog post on the former’s website, Oracle Corporation is demanding that the news outlet cease to operate behind its name as the readers might confuse the news blog with the Oracle corporation itself. The software corporation claims that it also published blockchain and cryptocurrency-related articles on their Oracle Magazine® and thus it is justified that the news platform can appear to infringe their copyright on it.
Oracle Corporation, just like other big companies, has successfully defended their cases against smaller companies trying to use its name in their brand name in any way. Previously they have sued Crypto Oracle LLC, a blockchain company of alleged federal trademark infringement, state trademark infringement and cybersquatting.
However, Oracle Times has completely refuted the case as legal-worthy as they state that they have been using the website Oracletimes.com for 3+ years now when the software company itself added blockchain to its trademark only a few months ago in April 2019. They also reject claims that they are infringing on other aspects of the trademark as both operations are extremely different.
It remains to be seen what will become of this legal tussle but it is worth noting that the cryptocurrency and blockchain space is now prized territory and even big companies are fighting over its exclusive rights. In the past, even Google has been the subject of a lawsuit by the same instigator in 2010, but that case was dismissed.
