Reddit Experimenting With Blockchain-Based Points System

• Reddit users will receive points equivalent to tokens held on the Ethereum blockchain

Reddit is experimenting with a new blockchain-based system called Community Points. Essentially, users will receive points for participating in Reddit communities, and these points are equivalent to crypto tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, giving users full control of the points and the ability to buy and sell them.

Apparently, the more points a Reddit user obtains the more weight they will have when voting in polls, in addition to giving users privileges such as the ability to post specialized emojis and GIFs.

This new blockchain-based system is a step up from the current system that Reddit has, which is called Reddit Gold. Basically, Reddit users receive Reddit Gold for making high quality and popular posts, but they cannot sell it or trade it, only receive it from other members who purchased Reddit Gold. Under the Community Points system, it is possible that an economy will arise where Redditors can earn points and sell them for actual money, increasing the incentive to make quality posts on Reddit.

All of this being said, Community Points appears to be in a limited trial phase now, and it is unknown when it will be adopted across Reddit.
