US Copyright Office Does Not ‘Recognize’ Craig Wright as Satoshi

After the recent attempts by Craig Wright to copyright Satoshi Nakamoto’s famous white paper and Bitcoin code, the US Copyright Office has officially released a clarifying statement to dispel any rumors that it officially “recognized” Wright as the inventor of Bitcoin.

The Copyright Office clarified the whole matter in a press release:

“As a general rule, when the Copyright Office receives an application for registration, the claimant certifies as to the truth of the statements made in the submitted materials. The Copyright Office does not investigate the truth of any statement made. In a case in which a work is registered under a pseudonym, the Copyright Office does not investigate whether there is a provable connection between the claimant and the pseudonymous author.”

The rumors caught strength when the press release by CoinGeek stated that Wright has been granted the copyright for the original Bitcoin Whitepaper by the US Copyright Office, and implied that Wright is indeed Satoshi Nakamoto.

Amids the news, Bitcoin SV price also went on a vertical, increasing up over 72% in just a few hours after the “announcement”.  But most of the Bitcoin community remained skeptical of the claims, as even registering copyright, assuming that it happened, is certainly not an immutable source of truth.

As clarified by Jerry Brito, Executive Director at CoinCenter, registering a copyright is nothing more than “just filing a form”. He added that the copyright office hadn’t investigated the validity of the claims, as “they just register it”.

He went on to add:

“Unfortunately there is no official way to challenge a registration. If there are competing claims, the Office will just register all of them. Someone else could today also register themselves as the author of the white paper, thus inviting a suit from Wright and letting a court decide on the validity of the claim. I volunteer @petermccormack.”

But after the clarification by the copyrights office itself, all such claims from Craig Wright, at least for the foreseeable future, have been put to bed.
