Singapore Grads to Get Certs on Blockchain

Starting this year, 18 educational institutes in Singapore will be issuing their graduates with certificates that can be verified on blockchain, according to tech media outlet Tech in Asia.

These institutions will be using a solution provided by OpenCerts, which bills itself as “an easy way to check and verify your certificates”. The open source state project is still in the initial stages of progressive roll out and will be running on the Ethereum blockchain.

The proponents of this new initiative are of the belief that blockchain-based solutions can assist the education sector in several ways, not least in ensuring that certifications are verifiable, tamper-resistant and stored digitally. With a unique code issued to every certificate, there can also be no duplicates.

Should any certificate be tampered with, a new hash will be created, resulting in the new creation guaranteed to fail validation. In addition, digital versions will mean a huge savings on cost as they no longer need to be printed, and no longer need effort to verify.

The project is a cooperative effort from four organizations: SkillsFuture SingaporeGovernment Technology AgencyNgee Ann Polytechnic, and the Ministry of Education.
